Writing Workshop: Character Motivation with Lara JK Wilson

As part of the 2018 Concord Festival of Authors, we present Wednesday Writing Workshops! Join Be Well Be Here founder and short-story author, Lara Wilson, for VOICE & TRUTH: INSIGHT INTO CHARACTER MOTIVATION, a writing workshop that explores what humanizes fictional characters. We’ll look at character development not simply as an exercise in conflict resolution, but by unfolding gradual shifts in perception revealed through the action / reaction paradigm. By defrosting Hemingway’s iceberg theory to see what lies beneath the surface of our story, we’ll discover ways to mindfully sustain our characters’ emotional resonance through a voice of authenticity. We’ll also examine how character interaction helps to structure our story and engage the reader with compelling shifts of perspective. Feel free to bring a paragraph that reflects your character’s deepest longing, or prepare to create one here!

Hunter's Moon Slow Flow Yoga with Yin

The Hunter's Moon (also sanguine moon) appears on October 24th after the Harvest Moon, so-named as the time to hunt summer-fattened deer and fox in now bare fields. This slow flow yoga class with yin practice honors the impending winter season as illuminated by the Hunter's Moon. Slow everything down to observe, nourish and integrate your most precious assets: body, mind and soul. This class invites the physical body to move gently and consciously towards stillness. Here, we perceive and challenge our somatic responses to gentle stress on the connective tissues of the body, specifically targeting the hips, lower back, shoulders and neck. Guided breath work and visualizations help you tap into the kinesthetic sensitivities of your being to engage the Rest and Relaxation Response, leaving you rested and restored. Open to all levels of practice.

Reiki Training Level I, Part 1

THE ART OF ENERGY HEALING & REIKI LEVEL I TRAINING - PART 1

To enter our yoga (or other spiritual) practice deeply is to enter a relationship with Mahashakti Kundalini, the innate spiritual energy of transformation. The practice of Reiki, (Japanese for Universal Life Energy) supports us in cultivating awareness, sensitivity, and regular utilization of the healing aspect of this sacred energy.

Reiki is not only a profoundly relaxing, restorative healing modality, it is a way of life attuned to the currents that draw us naturally toward wholeness and well-being, so a perfect complement to Yoga practice. Reiki Level 1 is a powerful and life-affirming sacred event that will empower you in your working with energy.

Our purpose in teaching the empowerment symbol during Reiki 1, instead of waiting for Reiki 2, is to immediately begin to open and activate the third eye, and to energize self-healing to the highest level.

Part 1 with Nicole Grant ~ $50: Intro to Reiki energy healing & Initiation attunement

Writing Workshop: Historical Fiction with Marjan Kamali

As part of the 2018 Concord Festival of Authors, we present Wednesday Writing Workshops at Be Well Be Here! Join Marjan Kamali, celebrated author of Together Tea and Grub Street instructor, to learn to write historical fiction by being storytellers first. The workshop will begin with a discussion of favorite and successful historical fiction novels and stories. We will examine what makes them work, why they stay in our psyches, and why their characters feel real. We will then explore specific strategies for research, world-building, dialogue and language, setting, plot, cultural tradition, and the development of authentic characters in our historical fiction. The focus of the workshop is to create a world strong enough to anchor us in the past without having setting or politics overpower the story. Our characters’ authentic needs and choices will be the central driving force of our historical fiction.

Writing Workshop: Big Emotions with Melissa Jean

As part of the 2018 Concord Festival of Authors, we present Wednesday Writing Workshops at Be Well Be Here! Join us for JOY, GRIEF, LOVE: BIG EMOTIONS IN CREATIVE WRITING with Melissa Jean from the mindfulness studies and creative writing programs at Lesley University. In this workshop, writers explore the struggle to communicate big emotions—especially positive ones, like joy and love—without engaging in overly sentimental, greeting card-style language. Why (or when) is sentimentality actually a problem in writing? What are the clues that a piece of writing has tipped into a kind of untoward sentimentality or maudlin melodrama? How can writers avoid the common pitfalls of superficial sentimentality in their work? In this workshop, we will examine a variety of writing samples in several genres in order to generate a set of guidelines around writing big emotions without tilting into melodrama, followed by an opportunity to practice using the guidelines in our own writing. We will also explore mindfulness techniques that help writers dig into the descriptive specificity of their own experiences of emotion.
